𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 : Energy Justice Week Briefing 2024

To ensure the country’s energy security, promote industrialization, and foster a sustainable economy, prompt implementation and financing according to the Mujib Climate Prosperity Plan (MCPP) is imperative. Simultaneously, the Energy Ministry has to develop a low- or zero-emission energy supply and demand system in the Integrated Energy & Power Master Plan (IEPMP) in alignment with the goals outlined in the MCPP.

This stance was articulated during a media round table meeting held on September 13th, at the Noakhali BRDB Auditorium. The event was jointly organized by Participatory Research and Action Network-PRAAN, Bandhan, Coastal Livelihood and Environment Action Network (CLEAN), and the Bangladesh Working Group on Ecology and Development (BWGED). The meeting, chaired by Mr. Aminuzzaman Milon, PRAAN Programme Officer Zahid Mohammad Imran presented the keynote paper.

Journalists representing various media outlets in the Noakhali district attended the event.

During the meeting, speakers underscored the importance of addressing the shortcomings in the energy sector, which has hindered Bangladesh’s progress towards becoming a developed nation by 2041. This situation has compelled Bangladesh to rely heavily on energy imports, leading to the need for substantial financial resources in the future to meet the growing energy demand.

To address this challenge, it was emphasized that according to the Mujib Climate Prosperity Plan, state investment and timely measures should be prioritized to ensure that at least 40% of the country’s electricity comes from renewable sources by 2041, with the ultimate aim of achieving 100% renewable electricity by 2050. Speakers emphasized that renewable energy is the most viable solution to confront the ongoing energy crisis, ensure Bangladesh’s energy self-sufficiency, promote energy independence, and position the country as a leading exporter of green energy on the global stage.
